A 02 - Bilsdale and Wain Stones from Claybank
The route goes up the west side of Bilsdale with views to the south, then through a valley before gradually ascending the west side of Bilsdale and returning on the Cleveland Way with panoramic views from the northern edge of the moors.
There is a convenient (and free) car park at Claybank where a road to Ingleby Greenhow leaves the B1257. The map is OS Explorer OL26 (North York Moors, Western Area), the map reference NZ 572035.
The walk route
1. Leaving Claybank car park (map reference 572035), set off south along the road (towards Helmsley). After 250m, cross the road and turn right along a farm drive ((to the left of the Cleveland Way). At a gate on the drive, follow the waymark along a grass path that runs above the farm for a further 300m to a stile on the left of the path. [total 1050 metres]
2. (567031) Turn left over the stile and follow a narrow path downhill through bracken, over a stile and crossing boggy areas via a boardwalk. After about 350m there is a gate. Go through the gate and immediately turn left. [350m]
3. (563031)
Go through a gate on a path between Garfitts farmhouse and a stream. The path becomes a consolidated gravel track that turns left after 550m; at this point, go straight on through a gate, along the top edge of a field to a stile by a wood. Go over the stile and along the outside of the wood until the path fizzles out beside a stile without a waymark. [800m]
4. (563024) Use the stile to cross the barbed wire fence and follow the path downhill through a wood; where it divides, turn sharp right and down to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and up a very steep and possibly muddy bank and over a stile into a field. Continue uphill along the field edge for 200m to meet a farm track from Broadfield Farm. Turn right onto the track for 200m. [450m]
5. (560024)
Where the track goes over a cattle grid and turns right, turn left through a gateway into a field. Initially follow a track across the field then keep straight on towards a wood and a waymarked gateway. Go through the gateway and follow the forest track around the edge of a wood to where it passes between two areas of woodland. [550m]
6. (557026)
Continue along the track to where the track turns right to Whingroves Farm, then go straight on through a gateway and follow the waymarked route slightly left (away from a stone wall) and through a gap in the wall ahead. Go through the field alongside a stone wall to your right, and through a gate in that wall. A short distance further, there is a stile to your left. [550m]
7. (556029) Turn left over the stile and go straight on with a stone wall on your left for about 40 metres. Look for an indistinct path to the right and follow this path over rough ground as it becomes more obvious. Keep following the path, keeping to the same level until the ground rises to a wooden sign. [650m]
8. (555034) At the wooden sign, turn right onto the wide track of the Cleveland Way. Initially grassy, this track becomes paved with stone and ascends steeply with some steps to an outcrop of rock (Wain Stones) and a viewpoint. [400m]
9. (559036) Climb through the rocky outcrop (not the path to the left of the outcrop) to a stone-paved path along the top of the ridge (Cleveland Way). Follow this path back to Bilsdale, descending by rough stone steps to a gate then down to the road. [1550m]
10. (572033) Turn left onto the road and return to Claybank car park. [total 250m]
