This walk covers about 5 miles of both undulating and flat farmland, with good views on a fine day. A pleasant route in the Howardian Hills area.

Walk directions
1. From the car parking place (map reference 671707), turn left into the village street and after 150 metres, turn right onto a signed footpath track between houses, continuing ahead through a garden, on stone paving, up steps and across the lawn to a gate. Go through the gate, slightly left across a small field to another gate then left along a field edge path to the far end of the field. [total 700m]
2. (677704) At the end of the field, follow the field edge to the right for a short distance, turning left (beside a piece of tyre) onto a path through trees before reaching a waymark and cross a footbridge into a field. Turn slightly right and cross the field diagonally to the far corner. Go through trees at the field boundary, turn left then right so as to walk to the left of a hedgerow. [300m]
3. (678703) continue along a poorly defined field edge path (hedgerow to the right) and find a narrow way through the boundary at the far end and turn right along the edge of a field and left at the corner. Carry on to a waymarked path junction. [500m]
4. (689698) Turn left up an incline to the end of the field and right along the field edge where the path becomes a wider track. On meeting a compacted soil and stone track (Sleigh Lane), turn left and follow this track to Ganthorpe village. [ 850m]
5. (689703) Cross the road into Ganthorpe village, following the village road round a bend to an old pump (?). Turn left through a white garden gate and continue between houses and between a garden and farm yard to a gate into a field. Cross the field to another gate then through another field then slightly right and left to cross a stream. Follow the track to near the end of a wood on the left. [550m]
6. (691708) Turn left through a waymarked gate and continue through a few trees and along a field edge with a wood on the left, to the end of the wood. Continue along the boundary between two fields – if the edge of the field on the right is overgrown, use the edge of the field on the left. Continue straight ahead using whichever field is easier. The field edge on the right becomes a slightly overgrown pedestrian lane (Broats Lane) that becomes clearer and the route of choice, widening and emerging onto a road at a road junction. [1000m]
7. (681709) Turn right at the road junction for about 300m to a bend, then continue straight ahead on a long farm track that eventually climbs to the top of a ridge. On the way you may see Exmoor ponies and perhaps hear and see a buzzard. At the top of the hill, continue downhill towards Howthorpe Farm. [2000m]
8. (676728) Just before reaching the farmhouse, turn left across grass and downhill to the far left corner of the field. Go left through a gate and right along a field edge then left along the bottom edge of the field alongside bushes that hide a small stream. Continue to a footbridge on the right, cross the bridge and turn left along a somewhat overgrown path alongside the stream to a footbridge on the right that crosses another stream. Cross the bridge and uphill diagonally across a field to a metal gate. [1000m]
9. (675720) Go through the gate and slightly right along a field edge path over the brow of a small hill and slightly left along a path between fields to steps up to a grass path across a school playing field. Cross the playing field to leave by a track that leads out to the road where cars are parked near to the church at Terrington. [1400m]
