Route H 08 - North-east of Terrington to Fryton Woods
This walk, about 5 miles, passes through a variety of scenery (agricultural, woodland, etc.) with some distant views on a good day. There are bluebells in May!
Park at the junction of a farm track with the Terrington-Coneysthorpe road 2 miles beyond Terrington (Explorer OS map 300 “Howardian Hills and Malton”, ref SE695717). If the parking area is full, use the roadside verge east of the junction).
Walk directions
1. Leaving the junction between a farm track and a bend in the road from Terrington to Coneysthorpe (map reference 695717), set off west along the track for just over a mile. [1750 metres].
2. (678722) The track turns right and joins Ebor Way / Centenary Way at a wooden signpost and heads downhill to a farm. [600m]
3. (676728) At Howthorpe Farm*, keep right through the farm yard and continue along a solid track downhill to a signpost just before a pond at the bottom of the valley. [400m] For alternative from *, see below step 14
4. (677732) Turn left at the signpost and continue on a grass path, Ebor Way, to a wooden signpost near to a gate*. [250m] Alternative route (see 3) returns at *.
5. (675733) Go through the gate and immediately turn right (Ebor Way) alongside a stream. Follow the path along the bank of the stream, around the edge of a field and through a wood to a waymark where the path turns left out of the wood and right along a field edge to an obvious piece of wooden fence ahead. 6. (671738) To the right of the piece of fence, turn right through a gateway and down across a muddy area to cross a footbridge, then uphill across a boggy field to a gate into a wood. [50m]
7. (671738) Do not go through the gate, but follow the marked footpath to the right alongside the wood to the point where it meets a path coming out of the wood on the left and crosses a stream by a culvert on the right. [250m]
8. (672740) Turn right over the stream and follow the field edge path to a gate into a wood. Continue through the gate and follow the more solid track (muddy in wet weather) uphill to a signpost where a path crosses. [550m]
9. (676738) At the crossing of a path from Wath to Fryton Moor, continue along the track until it meets the end of a road [Fryton Lane] on the left. [950m]
10. (685736) Continue past the barriers along the same track (towards Coneysthorpe for just over half a mile, entering an area where trees have been cleared (and replanted), to a wooden sign-post with the end of the wood just in sight. [900m]
11. (693733) Turn right (signpost to Hall Moor) onto a steep, narrow bridleway downhill, taking great care particularly if the ground is wet. Continue through a clearing to the bottom of the valley and a gateway into a field. [350m]
12. (692729) Continue along the edge of the field (young trees on the right) to a gateway into a wood. [300m]
13. (691726) Continue through the gateway and follow the track through the wood, keeping right where another track comes from the left. Continue past a pond in the wood and shortly after this, where the track turns sharp left, continue straight on uphill and past a barrier to reach a solid track. [850m]
14. (691718) Turn left onto the track (along which the walk started) and continue to the junction with the road. [400m]
Alternative to directions 3 and 4
3. (676728) At Howthorpe Farm*, do not follow the waymark to the right but pass in front of the farmhouse then follow a footpath waymark left over a stile into a field. The right of way goes diagonally across this field to the bottom corner, then returns on the other side of the fence to the right. If a gate is open, after crossing the stile, turn right, go through the gate and turn right again. [100m]
4. (675728) Continue across a field then bear left downhill along the side of a valley to meet another path near a signpost at the bottom of the hill. Turn left to a gate*. [500m]
