K 03 Brubber Dale and Thixen Dale

Route K 03 From Thixendale through Brubber Dale and Thixen Dale

A circular walk of about 5½ miles starting and finishing at Thixendale (OS Explorer map 300, Howardian Hills and Malton, ref SE842610). Undulating wolds scenery (wide, grassy valleys), not muddy, some long gradients in the first half of the walk. Part of the route is on OS Explorer map 294, Market Weighton and Yorkshire Wolds Central.

Suggested parking place in front of Thixendale Church where the road is wider.

Walk details

1.        From the Church (map reference 842610), head east and left at a road junction (844610), passing the Cross Keys on your right. Shortly before reaching a farm gate, turn left through a small gate and right into a field. Just past a cricket pavilion, keep left along a small path up a small bank. Continue across a track and over a stile until a 2^nd farm track crosses the path and bear right onto the track which comes out to a road. [1000 metres] 

2.        (850614) Turn left onto the road and shortly right through a gate then continue alongside the road [on Access land] to a track that comes from the road. Turn slightly right onto the track and climb the side of the valley to a gate on the right. Go through the gate and continue along the edge of a small field to another gate. Go through the gate and slightly right to follow a tarmac drive up a gentle incline for 750 metres to a road. [total 1450m] 

3.        (856607) Turn left onto the road and follow it downhill (there is a grass verge) passing a track on the left and an entrance gate on the left at a bend. Just after leaving North Yorkshire, turn right through a gate into Brubber Dale (Access land). [950m] 

4.        (864605) Continue along the bottom of the valley for 1 kilometre passing the entrance to Cowdale on the right and heading towards a wood. Before reaching the wood, look for a wooden sign on the right indicating a junction with the Yorkshire Wolds Way. [1000m]

5.        (860596) Turn right and follow the Wolds Way up the length of a grassy valley and through a gate to join a gravel track. Continue along the track, turning left at a junction then bending right. When the track turns left, continue straight on along a grass field edge path to a road. [1300m]

6.        (848593) Cross the road onto a track with grass in the middle, gently down to bear left through a gate. Follow the track downhill into Thixen Dale to a wooden signpost. [650m]

7.        (845590) Turn sharp right and follow the bottom of the valley for 1450 metres then turn right onto a road. Follow the road for 700 metres passing a double road junction on the right then turn left for 300m to the parking place near the church. [2450m]
