Route C 02 From Rosedale Abbey to Northdale, return over moorland
Distance just under 5 miles. From a beckside path climb gently through hillside fields to return over heather moorland and then down into the valley. Good views in suitable weather. May be muddy in places after rain.
Start from a small car park behind the (now closed) Milburn Arms pub in Rosedale Abbey (Explorer OL26 “North York Moors (West)”, ref SE725960)
Walk directions
1. From the car park behind the Milburn Arms (map ref. 725960) go through the gate heading away from the road across fields, through gates, following the beck along the valley. Where there is a choice between a permissive path and the public footpath, keep to the upper (public) path that passes through gaps in stone walls to a gate and wooden footbridge over a small stream [total 800m]
2. (724967) Continue over the bridge and across fields, gradually gaining height. At a wooden signpost, take the footpath bearing right (not the bridleway to the left), uphill to a gate below a stone barn [total 300m].
3. (724972) Through the gate, with waymarks to left and right, turn right uphill to a gate just beyond the stone barn. [total 150m].
4. (725973) Through the gate, turn left onto a track (good views of Rosedale) and follow this to where it joins a tarmac road and continue to Northdale Farm [300m]
Note: 140m after joining the road, there is a bridleway to the right uphill; this is a short cut but a steeper climb.
5. (724980) At Northdale Farm, the road becomes a track and bends to the right to go round the outside of farm buildings. Continue until the track bends downhill to the left, with a gate ahead and another to the right [250m]
6. (724982) Turn sharp right through the gate on the right and follow a slightly boggy moorland track gently uphill to the point where the stone wall on the right comes to an end. Note: about 300m beyond this point, the short cut from 4. above rejoins this path. Continue on the moorland track to a gate in a stone wall [750m].
7. (731974) Do not take a path to the left, but continue gradually moving away from the stone wall. Do not venture onto a more definite track a little way to the left but continue in the same direction to a road [1150m].
8. (737968) Cross the road onto a signed public bridleway; follow this less well-defined track towards a road and a wood beyond. There seem to be 2 routes, one reaching the road after 350m (turn right for a further 700m), the other reaching the road after 800m (turn right for a further 250m) [total 1050m] .
9. (740957) At the point where the wall and wood on the left meet the road at a gateway, turn right off the road just before a stone wall and head downhill moving away from the wall and passing a seat. Follow the path round to the right and down to a gate in a wall [total 250m].
10. (738957) Through the gate, continue downhill heading to the left of a wood. Cross a stream on a boardwalk, veer towards a gate to the right then through this gate and downhill across fields to a wooden signpost [450m].
11. (734955) Turn right, crossing a wall with stone steps and a wooden stile. Continue across fields, through a wooden gate and a metal gate to The Grange Farm [400m]
12. (731958) In the farm yard, turn left then to the right and left to a tarmac road. Pass between houses to a ford negotiable by a boardwalk bridge. The road turns to the right and to the left; at the left bend, continue straight on through a waymarked gate. Continue with a stone wall to the left to a wooden gate. Go through the gate and immediately left through a farm gate then diagonally right, downhill towards a gate to the drive to a group of houses. Go through this gate and another and follow the drive a short distance to a road [350m].
13. (726956) Turn right onto the road into Rosedale Abbey. Continue, keeping right, to the village green on the left, and a road junction immediately before The Milburn Arms on the right [350m]
14. (724959) Turn right past The Milburn Arms and left into the car park [100m].
