H 09 Terrington, north to Hollin Hill

Route H 09 - North from Terrington to Hollin Hill

This walk covers just over 5 miles of undulating farmland and woodland with good views on a fine day. It shares some paths with route H 08. The paths are quite firm and should not be muddy, except in 2 short stretches.

Park in Terrington Village, near the Church, OS Explorer map 300 (Howardian Hills and Malton) grid reference SE672707. Park alongside the wall on the road leading to the church (or if this is full, park nearby – preferably in a side road, but there are usually spaces between cars parked in the main village street)

Walk directions (clockwise)

1.   From Church Lane (map ref. 671707) follow the road where it turns left opposite the Church for 300m to a cross-roads. Turn right and follow this road to where it becomes a farm drive. [950m]

The above is a change from the original route, requested by Cotril Farm during the coronavirus epidemic. The original route is as follows. From Church Lane, walk uphill past the Church and continue on a path between 2 walls to school playing fields. Cross a gravel area and straight on along a terraced path to steps down to a farm field and continue to a field junction. Turn left past Cotril Farm for 350m and turn right. [950m]

2.   (668714) Continue past a lake and the entrance to Rose Cottage Farm then continue on a path between the farm and a tennis court to a gate on the right. [700m]

3.  (668721) Go through the gate and follow a field edge path over the brow of a hill, through a gate and downhill to a gate and footbridge. [800m]

4.   (674724) Cross the bridge, turn left and follow the stream for 350m and right at the corner of a field uphill to a gate on the left. Go through the gate and diagonally right, uphill across a field to the right of a farmhouse to meet a solid track. [650m]

5.    (676728) Turn left onto the track, turning right through the farmyard and folow a farm track down to a valley, over a bridge between 2 small lakes to where the track turns right. At this point continue straight on through a gateway and look for a bridleway waymark into the wood on the left. [600m]

6.  (678734) Turn left onto the woodland bridleway (may be muddy) for almost 200m then (at a waymarked footpath/bridleway junction) turn right on the bridleway uphill through different woodland areas to where it meets a more solid track where the trees end. [700m]

7.   (676738) Turn right onto the track and continue to where the track crosses the end of a road on the left and a track on the right. [900m]

8.   (685736) Turn right and follow the firm track past High Baxtenhowe and Low Baxtenhowe farms to a T-junction with another solid track at the top of a ridge at the edge of a wood. [1700m]

Note that a bridleway on the right through a wood from a valley between the two farms, although marked on maps, is overgrown.

9.    (683721) Turn right onto the track alongside the wood until it bends right and meets another track (Ebor Way). Turn sharp left onto Ebor Way for 250m to a field edge path on the right. [800m]

10.   (680720) Turn right onto the path and after a short distance go through a gate and downhill to a valley where the path turns left then right across a narrow footbridge or a wider crossing a few metres further to a gate. Go through the gate and follow a field edge path through 2 large fields separated by a gate. At the far end, the path turns right along another field edge to some steps. [1500m]

11.    (672709) Go up the steps onto a tarmac path alongside a wall (playing fields on the right). Where the wall turns left, turn left across a gravel area and around a gate into a path between 2 walls that comes out into Church Lane. [250m]
