C 06: Lastingham & moors, map & directions

Route C 06: A walk over the moors from Lastingham village

The walk (~4½ miles) is mainly on firm tracks. It is a circular walk from Lastingham climbing gently to the west then north above the valley of the River Seven and back across the moors entering Lastingham from the north. Part of the walk is on OS map OL26, part on OL27 (North York Moors Eastern). There may be a muddy patch near the start after rain and a boggy area on the top of the moor, but with care, these will not present a problem.

Start from 200 yards beyond the church (on the road to Cropton) in Lastingham village (6 miles NW of Pickering; Explorer map OL26 North York Moors Western, grid reference SE728904). Park near the start point where the village road is wide, or at the side of a road leading into the village from Appleton-le-Moors.

Walk directions.

1.   Where the village road turns left (and a “no through road” goes off to the right, map reference 729904) follow the road out of the village towards Cropton and after 100 metres, turn right onto a footpath signed as The Inn Way. Follow this footpath through a muddy area to cross Ings Beck by a stone footbridge. Continue across fields for about a kilometre, alongside woodland to the right towards the end, finally emerging through a gate onto a road. [total 200m]

2.   (739895) Turn left onto the road and follow this for about 500 metres to a road junction at Lower Askew and turn right for 150 metres and, just before a bridge over the River Seven, turn left through a gate into a field and follow the course of the river round to the right then through a gate, left across the corner of a field to another gate and slightly right across a field uphill to a gate onto a road. [1000m]

3.   (743900) Through the gate, turn right onto a tarmac track (at a junction with a bend in a road) and continue up this track beyond the end of the tarmac, over a cattle grid into Access Land and along a tarmac farm drive for a further 500 metres until the drive turns right over a cattle grid to High Askew Farm. [1200m]

4.   (743912) Go round the bend to the right but turn left, before the cattle grid, onto a yellowish track reinforced with compressed stone and brick. Follow this yellow brick road gradually uphill for 700 metres (good views both ways along Rosedale) then a further 300 metres slightly downhill until a narrow footpath through the heather crosses the main track at a waymark. [1000m]

5.   (745921) Turn sharp left onto the footpath and follow the path across the moor. Where it meets a wider track, go straight across and follow the narrow path down to Tranmire Beck in the bottom of a valley. [1500m]

6.   (735913) Cross Tranmire Beck and continue up the other side of the valley. The heather moorland eventually gives way to grass, the path goes to the right of a wall with a thin line of trees, then comes to a signpost by a seat. [700m]

7.   (729910) At the signpost, turn left downhill to Lastingham. Go through a gate and continue down the tarmac road into the village. Turn half left at a road junction by a red telephone box and continue to the starting point. [600m]
