M 06 Pature Dale, Huggate: Map and directions

Route M 06 – Short walk to Nettle Dale, Pasture Dale and Huggate village

This walk shares part of the route with M 07 and is about 5½ miles long (only car drivers need to do the last half mile!).  In good weather, there are splendid views of some valleys from above on the middle third of the walk. There may be red kites overhead on the first third of the route, buzzard and butterflies on the last third.  There are sometimes cattle in Nettle Dale and in Pasture Dale in the summer.
Car parking is on a concrete lay-by beside the road from Huggate to Warter (OS Explorer map 294, Market Weighton & Yorkshire Wolds Central, reference SE 877544).

Walk details

1.    From the car parking place (map reference 877544), walk south (away from Hugggate) for 250 metres and turn right through a gate onto a track (Hawold Bridle Road, part of Minster Way) with views through Keasey Dale to Saintofts Dale. After about 900 metres, keep left and continue for a kilometre, past the end of Well Dale, to a gate onto a road beside Cobdale Cottage. [total 2200 metres]

2.    (858536)  Go through a gate, cross the road and continue through another gate along Minster Way that becomes a wide grass track gradually downhill to a gate and wooden signpost.  Go through the gate and follow waymarks more steeply down into Nettle Dale and along the side of the Dale to the left of a line of hawthorns to the end of the Dale. [950m]

3.    (849540)  At the end of the dale (junction with Millington Dale), turn right onto the Wolds Way. Go through the bottom of Nettle Dale and up the other side to a gate.  Turn right in front of the gate following the Yorkshire Wolds Way sign along the top of Nettle Dale with Jessops Plantation on the left. At the end of the plantation, turn left following a bridleway to a gate above Pasture Dale. Go through the gates and turn right on Wolds Way. [total 900m] 

4.    (854545)  Continue along the top of Pasture Dale for 600m to a bend to the left and continue for a further 700m to a gate onto a road. [1300m]  

5.    (865547)  Go through the gate, turn left onto the road for 150m to a road junction. Cross the road on the left and go through a gate, following a wooden sign indicating the Wolds Way towards Huggate. Continue on this field edge path for 900m then right onto a track for 150m to a road. [total 1200m]

6.    (867557)  Cross the road onto a tarmac drive leading to Glebe Farm. At a wooden sign after 500m, turn right on the tarmac drive then follow a narrow path passing to the right of Glebe Farm and re-join the tarmac drive. Continue downhill to a wooden sign and gate on the right. [total 1300m]

7.    (879557)  Go through the gate and diagonally upwards across a field towards a church spire. At the far side of the field, go through a gate to a road and turn right onto the road that leads through Huggate village for 550m to the junction with a more major road. [total 800m]

8.    (881550)  The Wolds Inn is a short distance to the left at this junction. Cross this road and continue for 750 metres, along a road signed to Warter, back to the car parking place. [750m]
