Route K 04 Deep Dale from near Bugthorpe and back
This is a walk of about 5 miles with a steep climb up a grass bank just past half way. The views are splendid in clear sunny weather but the Wolds can be misty. There may be sheep in fields and one field edge may have a little sticky mud.
Start from an unfenced roadside verge parking place near Glebe Farm (OS Explorer map 294 “Market Weighton and Yorkshire Wolds Central”, reference 798588). The walk also crosses onto OS map 300 “Howardian Hills and Malton”.
Walk directions
1. From the car parking place (map ref. 798588), walk along the road west towards Bugthorpe and turn right onto a slightly muddy farm track at the first wooden sign post. Follow this track until it crosses a stream. [450 metres]
2. (795590) Use the track to cross the stream then turn right through a gate and left before another gate. Continue uphill alongside the field boundary. At the end of the second field, turn right through one gate then left to a second gate. [400m]
3. (794594) Go through the gate, turn right and follow the field edge, turning left at each of 2 corners then right at a stile and across a pasture field to a footpath junction at a gate at the far end by a wood* (return route meets outward route here). [600m]
4. (794599) Do not go through the gate but turn left along the edge of the same field and, at the end of the field, take the right-hand gate and continue along the muddy left edge of a crop field to a stream crossing. [500m]
5. (789599) Continue, following a wire fence, to the far end of a pasture field. Pass through a gate and turn right onto a narrow tarmac road that climbs gradually for 600m to a cross-roads. [1000m]
6. (785608) Turn right onto a road then at a turning on the right, head slightly right and continue straight ahead over a stile (opposite a bungalow) and across a field to a stile close to the left boundary at the far end. Continue downhill towards the end of a hedgerow on the right-hand side of the field and down to a footbridge at the bottom of the valley; Deep Dale is visible to the left. [900m]
7. (794606) Cross the footbridge, follow a narrow path over a stile (slippery underfoot) then continue near to the bottom of the valley to its end, eventually through a gateway and up a small slope following vehicle tracks. [850m]
8. (798613) Climb out of the valley by zig-zagging up the steep grass slope, straight ahead rather than to the gate by a wood on the right. Near the top of the slope, head to the right to the corner where there is a gate into a crop field. [250m]
9. (801613) Go through the gate and turn right. There are views through 270 degrees on a clear day. Continue along the top of the valley and join a tarmac road that continues downhill, through a gate, and across a field to the drive (on left) to Mount Pleasant Farm. [1350m]
10. (798599) Turn right opposite the farm drive, cross the field, go through a gate and continue on a stony track, trees to the left, then bend to the left and through a gate at the end of the trees. [450m]
11. (794599) From this point* (see 3.), retrace the outward route in reverse, crossing the pasture field, deviating around a field edge to a gate. [600m]
12. (794594) Go through the gate then immediately right through another gate and left downhill to a stream , right through a gate and left onto a farm track. [400m]
13. (795590) Turn left onto the track that crosses 2 fields to the road. Turn left onto the road and back to the parking place. (450m)
Road down to Kirby Underdale in late afternoon
