Route K 05 from Kirby Underdale linking routes K 04 and K 06
This short walk (about 4½ miles) consists of two loops each side of the village of Kirby Underdale and also provides a link between 2 other walks (K 04 Deep Dale from near Bugthorpe and K 06 Thixen Dale from Kirby Underdale). It goes through undulating farmland on the edge of the Wolds. The paths go through long grass, so during or after rain, waterproof trousers may be useful. Some of the fields may contain animals (sheep and cattle). The surrounding scenery is good. The two loops may be taken as two separate even shorter walks (1 mile and 3½ miles).
Start from Kirby Underdale, in the centre of the village (Explorer map 294 “Market Weighton and Yorkshire Wolds”, ref 808585). The Village Hall has a gravel parking area beside a bend where the road enters the village – there is a notice that this is for public use when not closed by a barrier.
Walk directions
1. Leave the village of Kirby Underdale (map reference 806585), on the road downhill past the church (where route K 06 leaves this route to follow the reverse of the return route to point 10), round a bend to the left and uphill to a footpath through a gate into a field on the right. [300 metres]
2. (810584) Cross the field uphill for 200m to a gate; go through and turn right onto a wider track (where route K 06 joins), then through another gate into a field. Keep to the right side of the field downhill for 150m to a gate by a small beck. Cross the beck and turn left for 50m, through another gate and then turn right following the boundary uphill for about 300m to a gate leading to a farm track. [total 700m]
3. (808580) Turn right onto the track and follow it through Joiner’s Farm to the village of Kirby Underdale at a bend in the road. [500m]
The 3½-mile walk starts here.
4. (806585) Shortly after reaching the road, turn left across a gravel area to a gate, then go through the gate and follow waymarks across 3 fields (through 2 gates) to a further gate. [500m]
5. (801585) Turn right according to a waymark then follow the edge of a field downhill then round to the left, continuing alongside a stream and hedgerow, through a gate and to a further gate. Go through this gate to meet the track from Glebe Farm (the farm is to the left). Turn right onto the track for a short distance to cross a road. [600m]
This route joins walk route K 04 here, leaves it and meets it again at 8.
6. (796588) Follow the track across the road and continue until the track crosses a stream (Salamanca Beck) and turns to the left. Leave the track here (at a cattle grid) and continue uphill, following waymarks, through a gate and across another field uphill to a barrier; turn right through a gate then immediately left to another gate. [700m]
7. (794594) Through the gate, turn right and follow the edge of the field round 2 left-hand bends to reach a gate opposite to that by which you entered the field. Turn right through this gate slightly downhill then gently up to the end of the field. [total 600m]
Route K 04 path goes off to the left at point 8.
8. (794599) Go straight on through a gate onto a track to the left of woodland Follow the track around a bend to the right and uphill to a gate. Go through the gate and cross a field (with sheep) to an unfenced road, opposite the drive to Mount Pleasant Farm (the route K 04 comes down the road from the left then follows this route in reverse back to the Glebe Farm track; continue following these directions to meet walk route K 06). Turn right onto the road for about 100m to a gate across the road and a footpath sign on the left. [total 450m]
9. (798598) Turn left off the road and follow the footpath waymarks through a gate then slightly uphill towards the farm on your left, to another gate. Through this gate, follow the contour, descending slightly and towards the far end of the field, descending more steeply to a gate at the bottom right-hand corner. Go through the gate and cross a boggy field, down to a stream at the far side. Go through a gate to the right of the stream, then left through a gate and across the stream, then right, gradually diverging from the field boundary towards a larger tree at the left-hand end of a tall hedgerow. [total 900m]
10. (806596) Where another path joins from the left (walk route K 06) continue straight on through a gate and across a field to join the track from Woodley Farm at a right-angle bend. Continue along the track, around bends in a valley, over cattle grids and out on to a road. [650m]
11. (808590) Turn left onto the road and in 150m, before reaching a fence below farm buildings, turn right through a gate and cross a field, gradually downhill, to a gate (about a quarter of the field width from the far right corner), then through the gate and continue down and slightly to the right (before a clump of hawthorns) to a footbridge hidden in the trees. [450m]
12. (810587) Cross the stream, continue up the right side of a field to the top of a ridge then down towards a church tower in the trees. Go through a gate and cross a wooden bridge into the churchyard, continue uphill past the church and out of the top gate of the churchyard onto the road into the centre of Kirby Underdale village. [400m]
