Route H 13 - Coneysthorpe and sights of Castle Howard estate
The distance is just over 4 miles. The walk is mainly over farmland of the Castle Howard estate with views of the house itself, the Mausoleum, the Pyramid, the New River Bridge and the Temple of the Four Winds The walk is mainly on firm, flat tracks and there are no stiles and few gates, but a few parts of the route may be wet or muddy.
The walk starts from Coneysthorpe village (OS Explorer Map 300, “Howardian Hills and Malton”: reference 712713), north of Castle Howard. Keep to the left of the green and there should be places to park to the left of the road towards the top end of the village outside the Village Hall (£1 donation per car requested by the Village Hall).
Walk details (clockwise)
1. From the Village Hall (map reference SE712713), walk down to the road junction and turn left. Continue for 150m and turn right through a small gate in a wall that leads into a field beside a track (with wide white gates). Following a sign to Bog Hall, cross the track and head towards a gap between two areas of trees (views of Castle Howard). The trees to the right of the gap screen a sewage works. On reaching this point, go through a gate and follow the field edge to the right and continue to another gate. Go through this gate and turn right along a grassy field-edge path and through trees to meet a wider track to the left of where it crosses a stream. [Total distance 1150m].
2. (724707) Turn left and follow the firm track a short distance to a wooden sign where paths and bridleways cross. Continue along the track past farm buildings (Bog Hall) and follow the track for 1250m (views of Castle Howard Mausoleum) to farm buildings. Follow the signed track to the right for a further 150m to meet a tarmac drive. [1600m]
3. (732694) Turn right onto the tarmac drive for 1000m to a wooden signpost where a path crosses (the Pyramid is ahead). [1000m]
4. (722692) Turn right onto a track that crosses “New River Bridge” and continues uphill across a field to the Temple of the Four Winds. Head slightly right towards a wooden sign, then veer to the left to the edge of a walled-off wood towards a white gate. Go through a pedestrian gate to the left of the white gate, then on a firm track through a wood for 450m to meet a wider solid track. [1850m]
5. (719705) Turn left onto the track for about 250m and follow it as it bends right near the Great Lake then continues for 800m to gates. Go through the small gate on the left (used near the start of the walk), turn left onto a road for 150m to a road junction and turn right into Coneysthorpe village and back to the Village Hall. [1200m]
