C 09 Cropton to Sinnington, map & directions

Route C 09 Appleton-le-Moors and Sinnington from Cropton

This walk from Cropton (about 6 miles) passes through the valley of the River Seven, then up to Appleton-le-Moors on high ground and down to Sinnington at the bottom of the valley before returning along the top of the valley to Cropton. There are two quite steep uphill gradients and one downhill. The direction of the walk avoids having a steep climb near the end.

Start in the main street of Cropton village (Explorer map OL27 North York Moors Eastern Area, map ref. SE756890 – part of the route is on OL26, NY Moors Western Area).

Walk directions

1.   (map ref. 756890) From the village, return to the road junction and turn left then, just before the New Inn, turn right through the entrance to a caravan site. [150m]

2.   (755899) Go through a gate on a solid track and continue through further gates across grass fields and downhill to a wooden gate, then more steeply downhill to the bottom of the valley to meet a bridleway track at a T-junction near the drive to Cropton Mill. [600m].

3.   (750890) Turn left onto the bridleway and continue for about a kilometre to a wooden path junction sign [note that the bridleway can be muddy after wet weather]. Turn right on a wide grass path to the river then left to a bridge. Cross the bridge, turn left alongside the river and shortly right to a gate onto a tarmac farm drive at a bend near Appleton Mill Farm. [1350m]

4.   (746880) Turn right (almost straight on) onto the tarmac drive uphill for 300m then left on a track through a gate, then immediately turn right on a narrow path up into a wood. Near the far side of the wood, the path bends left and continues uphill to emerge into a field. [450m]

5.   (742881) Continue to the end of the long narrow field towards the village of Appleton-le-Moors. At the back of the village street, turn left then first right between gardens to the main village street. [700m]

6.   (735878) Turn left and, where the road bends to the right, keep straight on downhill on a bridleway track. Continue through gates and continue downhill to a gate on the right at a kink in the path. [1100m]

7.   (736868) Go through the gate and bear right through a plantation of young birch trees (Fred’s Wood) to a mature wood (Bishop Hagg Wood). Follow the path slightly left and uphill above the river. Go through a gate out of the wood, along the edge of a field then on a track that follows the course of the river until it arrives level with the river entering Sinnington. Continue, to meet a road next to a stone bridge. [1550m]

8.   (743858) Turn left onto the road and over the bridge then across the green to turn left onto a road on the far side by the Village Hall.  Follow this road for 200m to a road junction. Turn right up a steep hill to the Church and Hall (left, right, left) and continue upwards between fields. After about ¼ mile, at a junction, turn right towards a gate then left onto a narrow bridleway. [1050m]

9.   (745865) Continue on the bridleway between hedge and fence and into a wood. Where there are other paths, keep right around the top of the valley within the wood. On leaving the wood, cross the top of a field then through a gateway and across another field, bearing right towards a gate in the far corner. [1800m]

10.  (753881) Turn left onto the narrow bridleway and follow this for 450m where it becomes a wider, more solid track for a further 350m to emerge onto a road. Turn left past the New Inn and right at the next road junction into the main street of Cropton Village. [1000m]
