Route C 10: Circular walk from Sinnington to Cropton and back
This walk is just over 5 miles long, sharing some paths with route C 09. It passes through woodland of mixed tree varieties with some more distant views. There are a few muddy areas but, unless there is very heavy rainfall before the walk, these are easily crossed. There are some gradients (particularly approaching Cropton) and there are some narrow paths along the side of a steep slope.
Park in Sinnington Village in the Village Green area at the north end near the village hall (OS Explorer map OL27 North York Moors eastern, grid reference SE744858). There is a recommended donation of £1 for parking for half a day. A small part of the walk is on map OL26 (N. York Moors western).
Walk directions
1. Leaving the village green (map reference 744858), set off north along the road towards the church. Pass the right turn to the Church and continue along the tarmac road that turns slightly left (ignore the track to the right) and becomes a compacted gravel track alongside the River Seven until the river bends to the left and a track continues straight on. [total 500 metres]
2. (744864) Take the track that continues straight on and follow it through the edge of a wood. Cross another path (slightly right) at a signpost and continue to a stile out of the wood into a field. Cross the field towards a tree in the field, near to which is a gateway through the boundary on the right. [650m]
3. (744868) Turn right through the gateway, then left towards a gate into a wood. Pass through the gate and follow the narrow path along the steep wooded hillside (take care!). After 1km., there is a gate into a field and the path continues to the right of the gate and later veers right, uphill (instead of continuing through a small gate). [1000m]
4. (744878) Continue in the wood uphill and, where a track comes through a gate on the left, turn right onto the track and follow this for 200 metres. Where the path divides, take the left path that soon descends towards the river to a bridleway gate out of the wood. Continue between hedgerow boundaries and through another gate to a wooden signpost. [total 550m]
5. (748880) Continue straight on at the signpost onto a track towards Cropton and follow this for 1350m to a road. [1350m]
6. (752892) Turn right onto the road up a hill to a bend to the right. Cross the road and turn half left onto a footpath (not sharp left onto a track into Cropton Bank wood). This path passes the site of a motte and bailey castle. At the entrance to a church, turn right along a lane to the main street of Cropton. [Total 550m]
7. (757892) Turn right and walk through the village to a junction on a bend to the right. Keep straight on along the smaller road and follow it around bends to a more major road. Cross this road onto a field edge footpath and continue to the end of the field. [900m]
8. (753885) Turn left onto a grass track and ignore the path that shortly goes off to the right. Continue for 400m to a junction of paths at a gate. [400m]
9. (753881) Take the middle path (2nd on the right) through a gate into a field. Take a straight line, diagonally across the field, eventually meeting the wood on the right and continuing through a gateway along the top edge of a field and into a wood. [300m]
10. (750879) Continue along the top edge of the wood for a long distance. Where the path meets a hairpin bend on another track, keep to the left and continue until the path emerges from the wood through a gate with a field on the right and a hedge on the left continue to a point where a waymarked footpath goes through a gate on the right. [1400m]
11. (745867) Do not turn right, but keep on the more solid path that turns slightly left. Continue with a hedge to the right and a fence to the left until the path meets a solid track. Turn right and follow the main track where it bends to the left. [250m]
12. (746861) Continue down the track (wood to left, field to right) to a farm. Follow the track to the right as it becomes a tarmac road, bending left and right and passing the church before descending towards Sinnington village. At the bottom of the hill, turn left and continue to the village green. [800m]
