Route SH 02 – Sheriff Hutton to Stittenham and back - walk directions
This circular walk, about 4¼ miles from the lower green (5 miles from The Square), is mainly over agricultural land and through some woodland, but there are views back to Sheriff Hutton and forward to the Terrington ridge. Horses are trained for racing in this area.
Start at the lower green, East End of Sheriff Hutton (OS Explorer Map 300 “Howardian Hills and Malton” reference SE 656663).
The walk route
1. From the lower green (map reference 656663), set off along Church End, through the church gate and follow the grass path alongside the right of the church to a gate out of the churchyard. Continue on a short woodland path down to an open field and keep to the right-hand edge of the field uphill to the corner. [400m]
2. (658661) Do not go through the gate ahead but turn left before the gate along the edge of the field (towards Sheepclose Farm about 1200m away). At the bottom of the field, cross a small bridge over a ditch into another field. At this point, either follow the map route straight ahead across the field towards the farm buildings and to a stile, (or follow the wide grass field edge path to the right and around bends - 2 to the left, 1 right and 1 left - to a stile on the right). [1100m]
3. (669660) Go over the stile and uphill (between wire fences) to a single strand wire fence at the top (towards the left side of farm buildings). Go under the wire (or unhook the wire) and turn left to a gate at the corner. Go through this gate and through another, then cross a track and “gallops” and down the left side of a field to the bottom corner. Go through two gates into another field and uphill to the left far corner (to the left of Wheatclose Farm). [1100m]
4. (673668) Go through 2 sets of gates and cross the Malton Road. Go through a gap in the hedgerow opposite and continue on a path across a field towards the left side of the nearest woodland. Where the path crosses a ditch, veer lightly left to follow a path through the crop and right onto a wide grass field-edge path. At the corner of the wood, go through a gate into the wood to a wide path uphill that joins another and continues to the right of a garden fence. Go through gates on a grass track and turn right onto a compacted gravel track that bends left to the road at the centre of Stittenham. [1200m]
5. (679676)
Turn round and retrace your steps left and downhill to the point where paths join. Keep right, following the main path through woodland to a gate into a field. Go through the gate and turn right along the edge of the field (woodland on the right) and follow the wide field edge round to the left then (beyond beehives) look out for a gate into woodland on the right [700m]
6. (673676)
Go through the small gate and follow the path down through the wood, to a point where there is a small waymark post pointing uphill to the left. Take this path and come out of the wood over a stile into the field. Turn right along the field edge until, just before woodland, turn right through a gap in the right-hand field boundary, then briefly left then right onto a waymarked path across a field to the right, leading a gap to the right of dense hedge. Continue (right) onto a solid track and turn half-left beyond the field boundary. Follow this field edge grass track to the horse-training “gallops” [1100m]
7. (664671) Cross the “gallops” by ducking under the rails on each side then cross a footbridge and continue on a grass track at the field edge to meet a wider solid track beyond a gate. Turn left onto the wider track and, shortly, turn right onto the Malton Road. Cross the road and continue then turn left over a stile and take the path across a field and over another stile into a short length of fence-bounded path then right, through a gate, into Peckett’s Close. Continue into East End and return to the lower green. [1200m]
