Route H 11 - Coneysthorpe, Baxtenhowe Farms & Fryton Bank Woods
After a rather unpromising start along roadside verges, this route continues on farm tracks past Low and High Baxtenhowe Farms to Fryton Bank with views towards the North York Moors. After a woodland walk, there are views of Castle Howard on the way back to Coneysthorpe.
The walk starts from Coneysthorpe village (OS Explorer map 300 Howardian Hills and Malton, reference SE 712713) just north of Castle Howard. Keep to the left of the green and there should be places to park outside the Village Hall to the left of the road towards the top end of the village (£1 donation per car requested by the Village Hall).
Walk directions
1. From the Village Hall (map reference SE712713), walk down to the road junction. Turn right on to the road (then cross to the verge on the left side) and continue to a cross-roads. [600m]
An alternative car parking area to the left at the crossroads has been closed for a few years.
2. (707712), Continue across the cross-roads along the road towards Terrington. Follow this road for a mile (using the verge on the right) to a junction with a lane that is a public bridleway straight ahead as the road bends to the left. [1500 metres]
3. (695717) Walk along the public bridleway track for ¾ mile (ignore the first narrow bridleway on the right) to a waymarked bridleway track on the right, leading to Low and High Baxtonhowe farms and Fryton Moor. [1200m]
4. (683720) Turn right and follow the main track for just over a mile to where, at the top of a hill through a wood, crosses the Centenary Way bridleway and the view ahead is down a narrow road to lower ground and the village of Fryton. [1600m]
5. (685736) Turn right along the Centenary Way bridleway just inside the edge of a wood for about a mile and a quarter, emerging with a view to the right of Castle Howard before reaching a road. [2000m]
6. (704732) Cross the road and continue on Centenary Way along the top of a field and into a wood. Not far beyond where the wood on the left ends, look for a sharp right turn signed to Coneysthorpe, Centenary Way. [1000m]
7. (714729) Turn sharp right onto the bridleway to Coneysthorpe (this may be muddy in places after rain). Follow the bridleway waymarks through a wood then along field edges to enter the village of Coneysthorpe beside a small church at the top of a small hill. Continue down through the village to the village hall car park. [1800m]
