SH 01 – Cornborough Manor and Cornborough Farm from Sheriff Hutton

This circular walk, about  4½ miles from Sheriff Hutton School (5½ miles from East End), is mainly on farm tracks beside agricultural land with views to York and beyond.

Start at the crossroads beside Sheriff Hutton School where West End becomes Mill Lane (OS Explorer Map 300 “Howardian Hills and Malton” reference SE 647664 ).  

The walk route

1 .    From the crossroads ( map reference 647664 ), set off west along Mill Lane and continue where this becomes a grassy “green lane”. Follow the lane to a stile into a field, go over the stile, along the right-hand edge of a field and over a stile at the far end. [600m]

2.      (642665)   The outward and return routes divide at this point. Go over a stile on the right then turn left across a field to a stile about 50m to the right of the corner. Go over the stile and continue along the left-hand edge of 2 fields, through gates, to a field south of Mill Hill Farm. Cross this ridge and furrow field diagonally to the far right corner where there is a stile and small footbridge  [750m]

3.      (634668)   Go over the stile and across the footbridge then along the right-hand edge of a field with the “solar farm” on your right. Go through a gate and along the right-hand edge of another field, through another gate and along a narrow path beside an electricity sub-station. Go through a gate to a road and turn left along the road round left and right bends, almost to the entrance to Cornborough Manor Farm  [600m]

4.      (630669)   Just before the entrance to Cornborough Manor, turn left through double gates onto a solid farm track that runs downhill (there is a wooden bridleway sign). Follow the track around gentle bends to a gate. Go through the gate and continue down an almost straight track for 800m to the point where the track turns right with a gate into a field ahead. Turn left onto a wide grass path alongside a stream to a gate into a field. Go through the gate then slightly right before keeping left along the edge of the field to a gate. [1500m]

5.      (622659)   Go through the pedestrian gate and turn left onto the solid farm track past Cornborough Farm and round a bend to the right. Follow this track for a further 800m until it meets another track at a T-junction. Turn left on another solid track for 300m to the point where the track turns right to Westfield Farm then continue straight on for 750m along a grassy track that becomes narrower as it gradually climbs to a gate at the top of the slope.  [2050m]

6.      (635664)   Go through the gate and follow the right-hand edge of the field to a wooden electricity pole and turn right over a footbridge (this bridge is broken, so tread carefully on the right-hand side). Continue to the far end of that field and over a plank footbridge. Turn left, following the field edge to the corner then turn right along the field edge to the far end. Turn left through a farm gate.[800m]

7.      (642665)   You are now at the point where you re-join the outward path. Turn right over a stile, across the left edge of a field and over another stile. Continue straight ahead along the grassy green lane back to the road (Mill Lane) continue along Mill Lane to the crossroads by the school. [600m]
