Route M 10 - Short circular walk from Fridaythorpe via Wold House Farm
Much of this walk is on farmland on top of the Wolds, with excellent Wolds scenery where the route goes through and above Wolds valleys.
The starting point is the interesting village of Fridaythorpe and the paths remain suitable after rain. Map: OS Explorer 294, Market Weighton & Yorkshire Wolds Central., reference SE 875591.
Walk details
1. (875591)
Walk south from the village to the A166 and turn right. Continue along the main road for 200m to a junction at a bend and turn left off the A166 onto a minor road that becomes a track leading to a junction of paths with a wooden sign by a gate. [750m]
2. (874584)
Go through the gate and keep right along the top of the valley (NOT the Wolds Way down into the valley). Where the top of the valley bends left, keep straight on through a gate and along a field edge path to a hedgerow field boundary. [550m]
3. (871580)
Immediately beyond the hedgerow, turn left for about 100m and follow the track to the right and across fields to the entrance to Wold House Farm. [1000m]
4. (866572)
Cross the farmyard to a barn, then left around the end of a wide gate and across another yard to the tarmac farmhouse drive by a statue of a farmer. Turn right along the drive for 250m to the first field boundary. [500m]
5. (862569) Turn right just beyond the hedgerow. Follow this field edge path until it meets a cross-roads with the A166. [850m]
6. (857576)
Turn left along the A166 (wide verge on left then cross to the right) for 400m to the entrance to Pluckham Farm (opposite a speed camera sign). Turn right along the farm drive and keep straight on where the drive branches to the right. Beyond a farmhouse, the drive becomes a compressed soil track and bends to the right, then to the left. [900m]
Note, an alternative (longer) route is to continue for a further 350m beyond Pluckham Farm entrance along the A166 then to turn right, through Pluckham Dale and into Thixen Dale, following the Wolds Way to the right, up the side of Thixen Dale and turning right along a path leading to the road near Gill’s Farm (continue straight on from 8.) [total about 3350m with gradients instead of 2200m without]
7. (852580) Continue along the field edge track (from which the tops of Pluckham Dale and Bradeham Dale may be seen to the left) for 600m until it meets a road. Continue along the road for a further 700m to where the Yorkshire Wolds Way crosses the road (100m beyond Gill’s Farm). [1300m]
8. (848593) Turn right following Yorkshire Wolds Way along field edges for 750m to a gate. Go through the gate and down into the valley to a valley junction (Brubber Dale). Bear right through a gateway and follow the bottom of the valley for 100m to where it bends left with woodland straight ahead. [1450m]
9. (860595) Take the wide grass path that climbs up the left side of the valley to a gate at the top. Go through the gate, turn left and follow the field edge path for 700m to a road into an industrial site. Cross the road onto a short track that comes out onto a public road. [1250m]
10. (852586) Turn right onto the road that leads into Fridaythorpe Village. Beyond a road junction, a path through a lych gate leads to the 12th century church that was restored by Sir Tatton Sykes in 1902. Continue past the pond into the village. [300m] to the starting point. [1050m]
